When Julia Cyr from the Kamloops Museum & Archives contacted me to ask if I would document another installation for them, this one being ‘Ruin and Renewal: Fire on the Interior Plateau’, I was excited; not only because the staff and management there are fantastic but also because I thought it made a natural transition from the Kamloops Fire Fighters Calendar I had just wrapped up.
I was not disappointed to see what Matt MacIntosh and the staff had put together after a devastating fire season for our province last year; it really is quite impressive! This excerpt from Kamloops This Week explains what this new installation is all about: ‘Ruin and Renewal: Fire on the Interior Plateau looks at the presence of fire in the area, marking last year’s infernos but also looking at how fire is managed today and through a historical lens. When the exhibit opens on Friday, visitors can view photographs taken last summer documenting hazy skies, and artifacts on loan from Kamloops Fire Rescue show how far technology has come in putting out fires. Leather buckets, for example, were once passed person to person down a line of volunteers from the South Thompson river to douse flames.’
If you haven’t checked out the new exhibit, they would love to see you at the museum. When I was there I heard many people commenting on the quality and thoroughness of the displays. There is also an interactive story board in which stories will be played via an iPad in the exhibit so people can hear them right away. People can also write down their stories and attach them to a wall in the exhibit.
